Crash while Sleeping/Waking Up

Hi, I have a Mac Studio, M2 Max, 32 GB of memory. It's connected to an Apple extended keyboard and a Samsung 43" 4K TV connected via HDMI.

Every time I let it sleep, it wakes back up with a message saying it had to restart due to a problem. I noticed that if the computer is sleeping for only an hour, then there's no issue. But if it several hours/overnight, the crash occurs.

Do I have a hardware problem? Or is there an OS issue that's being worked on? See log pasted below. I've only had it a few days.

Test the following work-around for a day or two.

1) Enable "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off"

see the screenshots posted by hcsitas at > Wake up a remote Mac mini - Apple Community

2) Then leave the Mac Studio on 24-7 with the display set to turn off

or... shutdown at the end of the day and startup in the morning.

Sadly the sleep/wake crash is an unresolved macOS issue that still needs fixing.

Hi folks, thank you again for the replies. So after trying some of the suggestions I decided to take it down to the Apple store and I did save the log that was generated. The tech that was looking at the log suggested that because the log is reporting a kernel panic, it could very well be the logic board. Since I was within my 14 days of purchase, I opted for a return and re-purchase. It should be arriving within a couple of weeks, I will report back whether or not the new machine also has this issue. I re-ordered with the same exact specifications.

I'd say, before saying it's a hardware problem, try some software fixes, you should try these 2.

  • Reinstall macOS from recovery: Shutdown your Mac and wait 10 seconds, turn it on and hold down the power button and the apple logo with some text under it that says "Continue holding for startup options", continue holding it until the text below the logo changes to "Loading startup options", then, when you see the Startup options menu, connect a keyboard and mouse if you haven't already, and click on Options, macOS Recovery should load up. Once macOS Recovery loads up, click on "Reinstall macOS", then follow the prompts and macOS should auto reinstall on your device without any data loss.

  • If macOS Recovery doesn't work, try restoring your Mac Studio through DFU Mode, but, make a backup of your data first, because restoring it using DFU will wipe the whole drive. I'd recommend you to follow Mr Macintosh's guide on how to restore your Mac Studio, this video shows you 4 different ways on how to reinstall macOS on the Mac Studio, and it also shows you how to do it through DFU Mode using Apple Configurator 2 and another Mac, this guide is for the M1 model, but, if you have an M2, it should work with the M2 model too.

P.S. the second one is the one you need. It formats the entire drive and reinstall the latest version of macOS on your Mac, remember as I told you before to make a backup of your stuff, you can do it manually by copying your documents and pictures on an external drive or iCloud, or, using Time Machine with an external drive or Local Storage Device like an AirPort Time Capsule or a NAS.

If any of these fixes don't work, you should take it to an Apple Store or a Apple Certified Re-Seller or a Repair Center.

We need to see what all is running & machine specs, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Den.thed & exilorian, thank you for your responses.

Since I simply only had some of my applications installed in addition to the standard stuff that came with the computer, I opted to start with the complete reinstall using the DFU method described in the video. To ensure I had the latest OS files, I opted for the restore option so it download the correct files from the Apple site.

However, unfortunately the problem still exists.

I'm considering doing an exchange, since I'm still within the two week period. I mean if this was assuredly a fix that was going to be done through the OS updates, I would wait it out. But I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem? I just don't want to end up with a lemon.
