Prevent Photos & Videos Texted from Others from Downloading to iPhone

*this is not related to the “shared with you” issue*

i am consistently maxing out the storage on my iphone and having to clear off space. when i go to: settings->general->iphone storage, i always get the recommendation to “Review Large Attachments.” when i click on that, i am presented with a list of all the large photos and videos that have been sent to me via imessage (see screenshot). i then have to manually select and delete each large attachment in order to clear up space. it’s a long and annoying process because of how many photos and videos (and gifs!) i receive via imessage.

my question is: how do i prevent these from being downloaded onto my device in the first place so i don’t always have to go in and manually delete them one by one!?

note that i have the “shared with you” feature turned off entirely so the shared photos are at least not showing up in my Photos app. i do not believe this is related to that issue anyways.
