How to stop receiving junk email on my Mac?

I am gradually getting daily an increased volume of junk mail, 100's and 100's. I never open junk mail but I am constantly trashing it and deleted my trash mailbox. How do you stop this?

I use a third party Spam filter— with Junk turned off and I hardly if ever see spam/junk in my inbox

"Junk" is Apple's name for spam

If Junk mail is not working for you as expected you can turn it off in Mail>Settings>Junk

You have the option of installing a third party spam filter. ex.
