Greetings Empress Matilda,
To ensure that you are following the intended steps, please start by reviewing the steps to delete an email:
"Delete an email
If you set the “Move discarded messages” option to Trash in Viewing settings in Mail, you can delete a message by swiping left on the trackpad with two fingers or by moving the pointer over a Mail notification, then clicking Delete (or the Trash icon)." Delete emails in Mail on Mac
If those are the steps that you are taking, be sure to restart your Mac since restarting can help resolve unexpected behaviors. Shut down or restart your Mac
Should you still be unable to delete the spam mail, start in safe mode and try to delete it there. This is a way of starting that prevents certain software from opening that could contribute to the issue. It may take longer than normal to start. How to use safe mode on your Mac
We hope this helps so you can delete the email.
Best wishes.
