Messages size on icloud storage not matching?

I keep getting an "icloud storage full" message, and the largest component is messages. After deleting a ton of media from my messages, if I go in and look at the total sizes of the individual messages, it's much lower than the total amount of space that's being shown as taken up on icloud. How do I get the icloud storage to update to reflect the deletions?
