Is it possible to have two picture-in-pictures at the same time?

I see the answer from 2017 that says you can't put two picture-in-picture overlays in the one part of the video. It's 6 years later, is it possible now?

I have a branded backdrop template/slide whereby both the slides and the videography need to be overlayed.

They also need to alter in position, going between the large slide and small video and vice versa.

Surely it can be done now.

Can someone tell me how? Or what software can do this if not iMovie?

It looks as though you are quite an ambitious film maker and have found one of the limitations of iMovie.

If this is the case, you would do better by moving to a more advanced editing app such as Final Cut Pro.

This is quite pricey at $299 BUT there is a 90 DAY FREE TRIAL. There are no strings attached . . . you simply press the Download button and FCP is yours for 90 days after which it stops working unless you decide to buy it.

Final Cut Pro for Mac - Free Trial - Apple (UK)

What is more, whenever an update comes out (if you haven't bought it) you can download that for another 90 days.

The other possibility is DaVinci Resolve which has a completely free version which is just as capable as FCP but it probably has a steeper learning curve.

Yes, it is possible now! I have noticed that you can open 2 Picture in Picture windows, by using 2 browsers.

(As each browser can only open 1 Picture in Picture window)

Personally, I use Safari and Arc. And it works perfectly fine!

Although this might not be exactly the same as your use case, but it is entirely possible to open 2 picture in picture windows on MacOS these days.

Hi,

The workaround to create two PiP's that play simultaneously in iMovie is this:

Create a new project for the purpose. Import your main clip into the timeline. Insert PiP #1. Export out the project to your desktop. Import the exported PiP clip into your master project. Insert PiP #2 onto the imported PiP #1 clip. The inserted PiP's will now play simultaneously. You would need to experiment with the animations.

I don't know of any other way of doing it in iMovie. I didn't quite understand an earlier poster's solution of using two browsers.
