Creation dates lost when copying folders

I just copied some folders from one mac (27 inch Retina iMac, Mojave) to my MBP (M1, Ventura). Copying was via thunderbolt cable using the MBP in target mode.

In the finder, the creation and modification dates are all the date and time of copying, not the original dates. This makes sorting and finding stuff really inconvenient.

Is there a way to restore the creation and modification dates in these folders?

My only guess is that it has to do with the squirrelly target mode implementation in Ventura. It was a real pain. After going through 5 or 6 steps to finally reach the sharing page (not the press and hold the T any more), I then had to go back to the original mac and select it from the network folder. Worse, by the time I got the folders copied over, I had to fix permissions on all items copied (five folders, four documents) by going in and re-adding myself as authorized user. With all the time I wasted, I might as well have just transferred the files (about 100 gigs) over my wireless connection.

Yes, I do have the files still, and I am presently transferring them via usb thumb drives.

I thought tehnological advances were supposed to make things easier.
