AppleTV too dark on MacBook Pro

Watching Silo episode 2 on my Mac Book Pro (M1). Very, very dark - cannot see much. The display is on and functional. Other programs (not video) all display fine.

My son came in and wanted to watch the show as well. Plugged in an HDMI monitor - Boom, the screen brightens to a normal level to watch a show that has a darker scene. You can see like you should be able to.

Something is wrong with the adjustment for the internal screen that makes Apple TV (and others) display too dark. Not sure how to fix this...

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.6

Thank you so much. This worked for me too. I had given up after months of dealing with apple support. They finally told me it was not their problem -- that it was software related and that I should set up another account on my laptop. Then I read your suggestion today and it worked perfectly and I am back to watching apple tv on my macbook pro

Excellent job troubleshooting!

To the OP and all participants...

Inform Apple of this Issue and Fix:

Report the solution to Apple. Doing so, Apple will know what issues have come about and what fixes to them exist. These are just User-to-User forums; Apple barely reads these forums as it is on their own time and will. So, report this. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - macOS - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "Application/Utilities" for the "Feedback Area"
  4. Comment: on what this issue is, and its fix.
  5. Proceed from there as necessary.

I've had this problem on my MBP as well, specifically that the AppleTV content plays too dark on the built-in display.

After some troubleshooting, what fixed it for me was to change an Accessibility setting:

System Settings -> Accessibility -> Display -> Display Contrast

Make sure the Display Contrast slider is all the way to the left, set to Normal.

That fixed it for me! I hope it works for you too.

Troubleshooting Dark Apple TV App:

A. Go here: Adjust Apple TV App Settings - Apple Support

B. Try Safe Mode:

While in Safe Mode, try entering the passwords. In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues.

  1. Boot: in to Safe Mode: [Hold Down: shift key upon boot].
  2. Log in: as same user
  3. Try: this once more
  4. Restart the Mac Normally
  5. Try: this once more

C. Single-Out this User:

Try an Admin new user, see if you can add the eMail account t to it. If so, then it is an issue with the conjuration of the current user. If not, then it is an issue with the entire Mac.

D. Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple SupportImportant: (applies if you can log in) Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, try this once more, seeing if you still get this error.
