Screen mirroring: iPad to Mac's second screen (main screen blackens)

Greetings to all,

  1. I have a M1 MacBook Air and a 3rd gen iPad Air.
  2. I can mirror my iPad's screen to my second monitor/projector that's connected to my MacBook. This is awesome.

Problem:

  1. Despite I achieve this with a great success, my main screen of my MacBook blackens (gets dark).
  2. When I press the F3 key that shows all desktops, I can see my screen. I can also use the mouse on blackened screen.

It seem some people did this issue consciously but I need to use my MacBook while I am sharing my iPad screen because I can't use my Apple Pencil while using SideCar feature.

Is there any way to overcome this issue? I feel like Apple engineers have a grudge against the people like me.

Best regards,

Mehmet Fatih Çelebi

Now that you mention this Google Meets, you can do it with other applications like Zoom as well.

It doesn't make sense for the screen to go black when airplay.

The "Airplay Receiver" feature on a Mac turns it into a secondary display for another device.

Much like in old days you could turn an iMac into a secondary display, when that feature is active, your mac applications continue to run in the background, but it can't interact with their GUI.

You can let Apple know of your wishes using the feedback page. Only Apple can change how macOS works, if they so decide.

Thank you for your suggestions, Mr. Sequeira, but the delay in notes app is unacceptable and unstable.

I have solved my problem using Miro app that is built in Google Meets.

I forced macOS to make a mistake, and I think the reason why I can not reach my will is not due to a hardware inadequacy, but because of a software limitation added to make an arbitrary or inexperienced patch.

Regards.

If I understand correctly, you are choosing "screen mirror" in your iPad, selecting your mac and using the external mac display as a mirror to your iPad. So far, so good.

As far as I can tell, you cannot share your iPad screen to one of your mac's displays, and use your mac at the same time. What you see (the other screen going black) is expected behavior: while your mac is acting as "Airplay Receiver", the rest of your mac interface remains in standby, but cannot be used.

I don't think the iPad Air supports connecting to the external display directly, so that option may be off.

A possibility (but which I cannot guarantee that it works) is to use an application like AirServer on your mac.

This would be a substitute for the built-in Airplay Receiver functionality; if that supports keeping your other display active and continuing to work on your mac, I do not know. Also, it's a paid application, but I believe there's a trial period.

(Disclaimer: I did use AirServer some years ago and bought the application, but I'm not in any way associated with it)
