On awakening I get this message frequently. Disk is connected via a USB Hub. It is always still mounted despite the message. If I run First Aid I get an error message 'could not unmount another volume .." on first attempt but it runs on second attempt with no problem.

tried all that and just now had another occurrence of the message. The second hub is a Currys UK brand (first was Trust) and the drive a Buffalo 500Gb. The message does not seem to appear when connected directly.
Is it a Bus-powered or Self-powered hub?
If it is Bus powered, leave the external drive connected directly to the Mac mini and use the hub for other USB devices.
If it is a Self-powered hub, then it should be able to supply enough power for 2 external drives and a couple of other USB devices.
In System Report, what is shown for mA available & mA used?
On System Settings>Energy Saver.is put Disks to sleep whenever possible checked?
What USB hub?
What brand external hard drive?
Does it give message connected directly to the Mac mini?

Bus power. I have two drives connected, one ssd directly, and the other HD via the hub. I use the hub also for an SD card reader.
