touch id

Touch ID is not working and has disappeared from my Settings menu so I can't add a new fingerprint. MacOS is up to date and all apps are up to date. I have run Disk Utility and Cocktail then restarted my MacOS. Additionally I restarted in Safe Mode but Touch ID is still not in System Settings. Is the next step to reinstall the MacOS and if so, can you direct me to the link?

Thanks so much for your prompt answer! Unfortunately completing both the suggested actions did not restore Touch ID to my system settings. Any further thoughts?

Typically it indicates a hardware issue...

You can run the user Diagnostic...not as definitive as Apple's own AST2 (Apple Service Toolkit) back bench diagnostic, but may kick out an error code.
