Ventura crashing on AFP/SMB access to Synology DSM

Ventura often crashing on SMB and AFP (both enabled) access to my Synology DS1522+ NAS (DSM 7.1).

I've been using a Synology for years to store my main files, and access them from my Mac Studio Ultra, MBP, iPad, iPhone…

Since upgrading my Studio Ultra to Ventura I've had issues affecting my daily use: so often when I save a powerpoint or excel file I get an error (read only file) and need to save it again with a different name.

Even if I save a PDF from powerpoint (in my network) and then try to access it with Finder (or even preview it)… my Finder freezes, I loose internet/network connection for minutes… up to when the finder tab closes automatically and I get back the network… After… I can access again the PDF.

I cannot understand if this is a Ventura problem or a Microsoft Office problem (latest version) or a NAS problem. I do not get the same issue if I save the file locally.

Any idea?

There is an April 25, 2023 DSM 7.2-64551 release candidate. Wait for its official release and apply that. See if this clears up your immediate issues. If not, I suggest you post your original content here on the Synology forum, stating explicitly your DSM version, your Synology device, and your version of macOS.

I have an ancient but reliable Synology device in the basement constrained to DSM 5.*, so of no help value to you. There are Windows 10 and 11 and Macs (all versions of macOS thru Ventura) in the house that interoperate with the SMB and AFP shares without any issues. Even the Apple TV 4K+ sees the Synology via the VLC application on it.

I normally always update my Synology, as soon as a new release comes up.

Hope this will solve it. But honestly not that confident... There's a tough triangle Ventura-MicrosoftOffice-Synology that seems complicated to address and debug (especially 'cos the problem seems not deterministic... sometimes it works, sometimes not). Crossing fingers.

There have been a lot of posts on here regarding SMB issues with Ventura with one of the previous OS updates. I don't know if those issues have been resolved yet. I don't recall the particular details of those issues.
