Ventura crashing on SMB access to Synology

I've been using a Synology NAS (DS1621+) for years to store all large files, and access them from my Mac Mini M1 via SMB (Mac Mini i7 before that).

Since upgrading to Ventura I've had issues affecting my daily use:

  • I run Python programs fixing tags and moving files in my FLAC music library. Those programs suddenly got stuck after working on a number of files, pulling the MacOS network stack down with them (no more SMB share access, Chrome shows 'no buffer space' and does not connect to the internet.
  • Today I wanted to import a folder with a couple hundred RAW images from an SMB share into a new Lightroom catalog. After about 200 images, the Mini got stuck and eventually rebooted.

I've worked around the music issue for a while, but the image import issue is a showstopper.

Anybody else with SMB issues? DSM on the Synology is current.

I think you have it backwards. I think the macOS network stack goes down and then that locks up the programs.

There are many such reports.

My recommendation is to try to avoid the use of network volumes as network volumes. It will be more reliable if you copy any files you need to work on to the local drive and import them from there. A command-line copy would be ideal, but you can use the Finder too. If you use the Finder make sure to keep it in pure "list" mode. Use Finder View options to disable icon previews. Don't attempt to use QuickLook previews. When it comes to file access, the Finder is a ravenous beast.

Same goes for the Python scripts I'm afraid. Yes it will continue to work, kind of, until it crashes.

Yes, you can send feedback to Apple. You can file bug reports. Just be realistic with your expectations. I see so many people who file bug reports and then eagerly check each and every update waiting for a fix to the bug they reported 2 months ago. After a number of years, they usually give up. 😄

I recommend you consider how you would do this work using an iPhone or iPad and try to find a way to make that work. That's the future of the Mac and it's coming up fast.
