software update doesn't show latest updates - how to fix?

Software Update in System Preferences never shows security updates to Monterey, even though they are available (it does show Big Sur, which I don't want to install right now). Yes, I can go to the App Store and get the update, but these should be showing up in Software update so they can be downloaded in the background when available. There's got to be a fix for this annoying and flawed behavior.

The latest Security Update for Monterey is 12.6.5

About the security content of macOS Monterey 12.6.5 - Apple Support

As to Why System Setting Software Update applet is not showing the Security updates >>

There are factors:

1 - Like poor Wifi connection

2 - Slow wifi connection

3 - Too many other people downloading at the same time and Apple Severs are overloaded

4 - Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software

Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue. Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.

5 - Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download

6 - If via wifi too many Other devices using the wifi at the same time reducing the Bandwidth to your computer.

7 - Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router

8 - My Favourite >> Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Try Again using the Software Update Applet in System Preferences

9 - Worst case - Restart in Recovery Mode and choose Reinstall macOS. This in theory will pull the latest version of Monterey available and commence the installation.

Firstly allowing the computer to fall that far behind in updates to the Existing Version of Monterey is generally not a good idea.

Secondly and from both personal experience and observation on their Forums.

Attempting to upGRADE to a newer version of macOS like Ventura with a badly out dated previous version is problematic

Agree one should Not Have to Restart the computer for the updates to Monterey 12.5.x to 12.6.5

It appears this is what the computer is presently experiencing

But at the same time, again from personal experience and observations on the Forums

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

3 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.
