I understand you are using Yahoo! as your home page, which is practically nothing but ads.
Using content blockers is ok, with the understanding that none are completely effective and all of them can cause unexpected website behavior. If you want to install one click the Safari menu > Safari Extensions... to research possible solutions.
I don't use any and I have nothing in particular to recommend. As a rule if a website is overwhelmed by advertisements I do not patronize that website.
After installing a content blocker, if you suspect it is causing a website to misbehave, it's a simple matter of clicking and holding the "reload" icon in Safari's URL field and selecting "Reload without content blockers".
I was under the impression you were using Safari. Since you are considering alternatives to it, consider Brave:
Brave incorporates its own ad-blocker in addition to other features.
Thanks - I use Firefox on my mac - very wary of these - I'll put up with ads
