my iPad always asks for a passcode to open it, just a fingerprint does not work can anyone tell me why please?

Check your iPad unlock settings:

Settings > TouchID & Passcode > [Use TouchID For] iPad Unlock - set to ON

If set to OFF, you will only be able to unlock your iPad with the device Passcode.
