iTunes Extras, encoded improperly, crashes iTunes

I have recently purchased two movies: Nobody and Cocaine Bear. Each includes "iTunes Extras." Each film includes commentaries as extras. However, when I play those particular extras, I hear audio for a moment, but the video is obviously encoded improperly and then hard-crashes the iTunes desktop client after a few moments.

Has anyone else witnessed this sort of behavior from ITunes Extras? And, how do we get Apple to correct these features?

Greetings Sleezure,

If you are having issues with playing iTunes Extras, it's best to start with these steps:

"Test your connectivity

  1. Check your hosts file to make sure that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with Apple's servers.
  2. If you’re having issues using AirPlay, Home Sharing, iTunes, or Remote, test the connectivity between the computers or devices in your house. They should be connected to the same network and subnet in order to function properly.

Test your security software

If you still have trouble after you test your connectivity, your security software could be interfering with your computer's connection with iCloud for Windows or iTunes.

In some cases, it might be necessary to temporarily remove your security software to isolate an issue. Some Internet security apps don’t uninstall completely, so you might need to download and run a cleanup utility for your security software for it to be completely removed.

Work with your security software provider to allow the complete list of ports and services that Apple products use or if you need help with uninstalling their software." Resolve issues between iCloud for Windows or iTunes and third-party security software

If the issue continues, you should contact Apple directly to Get Support.

We hope this helps!

Sincerely.

I’m having this same issue while trying to view the director’s commentary for Barbarian. Audio is fine, the video freezes up mere seconds into starting it. I even tried viewing it from my iPhone instead of my Apple TV device and I’m experiencing it on every device. I purchased this film directly through iTunes, so I don’t believe it has anything at all to do with you redeeming through Movies Anywhere.

Seriously, Apple, what’s going on?

I have spent several hours on the phone with Apple Support today for this same issue with “Cocaine Bear”. The commentary track plays audio, but the video either never appears, or freezes after about 30 seconds, or appears as blotchy color blocks with no visible image. A version of this distortion appeared on my Apple TV, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro.

So far, no resolution, because my copy of “Cocaine Bear” was redeemed through Movies Anywhere using the digital movie code that came with the Blu-Ray I bought. Apple directed me to Movies Anywhere, which directed me back to Apple, and now Apple is referring me to Universal Studios. I asked Apple why they can’t just put a copy of the digital film in my library to resolve the issue, but based on what you’re saying, that won’t solve the problem anyway.

Sure hope this gets sorted out and I’m surprised more people haven’t complained about it. At least your post let me know I’m not the only one.

To top it off, I just got disconnected after 2 hours of no results. I give up. The buck-passing was really bad. They kept insisting that it wasn’t their fault because Movies Anywhere is a “third party app”, which is nonsense. Movies Anywhere is a sort of digital locker that provides access to digital content through various streaming services, including Apple. Apple obviously has to make some profit from their arrangement with Movies Anywhere or they wouldn’t have signed the contract. So they are responsible for holding up their end of the deal by providing the digital content for which I paid I when I bought the Blu-Ray.

At the very least they should have agreed to put another copy of the film in my iTunes Library (for the paltry cost of $19.99 to them) but oh no, they can’t do that. Based on what you’ve said, the issue would have persisted, but at least then they couldn’t duck the responsibility. I’m very frustrated about all of this. Thanks again for your post and reply.
