Mail - Automatic email notifications

Hello,

For work reasons I need to be notified as soon as I receive new emails, even when Mail is running in the background behind other windows (not as the active app).

I have tried both the 'Check for new messages' options: "Automatically" and "Every minute", however neither does what I need:

  • I have found that "Automatically" does indeed automatically download new emails and makes a ping sound, but only while Mail is the active app.
  • "Every minute" downloads emails even when Mail is not the active app, but it does not make a ping sound – so I don't know that a new email has been downloaded.

Please, how can I download emails automatically, and be notifed of this, even if Mail is not the active app?

BTW Is there a way to get louder pings?

Many thanks!

Welcome

For the record, 2 of the 3 computers started with macOS 11 Big Sur and it worked.

Then moved to macOS 12 Monterey and it worked

Finally moved to macOS 13 and still works as originally outlined earlier

As your computer is either not performing as expected or there is a possible User Issue preventing it from working as expected >>>

Then have a few suggestions ;

1 - Get Support Choose a product and we’ll find you the best solution.Start now and open an Apple Support Ticket as they are Apple Employees to deal will these types of issues .

2 - Product Feedback - Apple and make it known to Apple regarding this ongoing issue

With Apple Mail Application Open.

The Mail Application Not In Focus but Active in the Dock.

When I am working in Safari and it ( Safari ) is In Focus.

When a New E-Mail is received the is s Ping Sound, a Fly Out Notification in upper Right of Screen and the Badge in the Dock icon of Mail will appear wth a Number.

The Number in dock of Mail will represent the number of New E-mail Received

As for Greater Should Level for the Ping or another User Chosen Sound for New E-mail Received - that is 100% dependent on the System Wide Sound Level the User has chosen.

Image 1 is the Notification Centre for Apple Mail

Image 2 is Mail >< Preferences >> General >> New Message Sound

Image 3 is Dock with the Mail Application Not in Focus but still an Active Application

With this setup on 3 different Apple Computers, 3 running macOS Ventura 13.3.1

These 3 machines do receive the Visual Notification, Sound Notification and Badge Count in Mail Application is the Dock

Thanks you.

> If mail is not open (active) you will not be notified.

This makes no sense to me. When Mail is active, my focus is already there, and I would notice any incoming emails. An acoustic notification is required while I do other work and can't permanently watch the Mail window. I think that worked in the past... Has anyone else a solution?

> To make a louder ping will require your Mac volume to be turned up. I do not know of any other way.

Audio from other apps can easily be louder so the original ping wouldn't be noticed. Where are these sound files located? I could make a louder copy of one, add it to the folder and select in in Mail Preferences. Shouldn't that work?
