It seems that when Time Machine is accessing a remotely mounted drive, df get stuck ( cannot be interrupted or quit) then reports multiple

Hello dgerman,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help troubleshoot the issue and get Time Machine working as expected again. Try these steps to resolve the issue creating the backup:

"General troubleshooting

  • Make sure your backup disk is plugged in, turned on, and securely connected to your Mac. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure both the disk and your Mac are connected to the network. If the network is experiencing problems, your backup disk may not be available.
  • Download and install all recent updates to macOS. If you have a Time Capsule, update it with the latest software and firmware. See Keep your Mac up to date and the Apple Support article Update the firmware on your AirPort base station.
  • Backups that are created in macOS Monterey or later can be only be restored to a Mac running macOS Big Sur or later."

This Apple Support page has the full details and more steps to take for a Time Machine related issue: Time Machine troubleshooting on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps to complete the backup.

Cheers!

I had previously read and checked all the standard TM suggestions.

This issue is of a significantly more severity since it is a problem where a process other than timeMachine is blocked.

+++++++++++++

Additional information: if unprivileged user df is repeatedly displaying

df: getattrlist failed: Permission denied

using

sudo df

from the same OR another terminal session,

works successfully AND

then unprivileged user df works for several times, until error reoccurs!
