Screen time counting while device is sleeping

Latest version of MacOS:

  • Screen time is counting while device is sleeping
  • Screen on usage shows nothing during that period
  • Safari is the application that causes screen time to be counted—it does so with various websites
  • I have cleared browsing data and restarted. The issue persists because I visit these websites regularly, for example YouTube. I should not have to clear my browsing data every time I want to sleep the computer and have screen time function normally.
  • When I quit safari before sleeping the issue does not persist.
  • When I shut down my computer the issue does not persist.

I am looking for a fix that will cease this issue. I do not want screen time to count while my device is sleeping as when I use my device the next day all my app limits have been reached and I simply need to disable screen time to use my device normally. I do not want to have to quit Safari before sleeping and/or shut down my computer to prevent this issue, I am tired of these workarounds.

I have looked at other threads about this issue and they all receive the exact same response. I have checked and tried the solutions offered already—my device is not clamshell mode, I have already reset my device once and disabled all my extensions. Ironically using screen time has only increased the amount of time I spend on my device to troubleshoot this issue.

Hi there alxkeda,

If you don't want an app to continue being counted toward screen time, quitting the app when you're done using it may be the most logical solution. This is also generally good practice, as it also frees up the resources used by the app, for other apps and process.

* To quit an app, choose App Name > Quit App in the menu bar. For example, choose Preview > Quit Preview (or press the keyboard shortcut Command-Q).

Keep in mind that if you click the Close button  in the top-left corner of an app’s window, the window closes, but the app remains open (a small dot below the app’s icon in the Dock indicates that the app’s open).

You may also want to make sure that Wake for network access is disabled:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Battery  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click Options on the right, click the pop-up menu next to “Wake for network access,” then choose an option.
3. Click Done.

Share your Mac resources when it’s in sleep

We hope this helps!
