Message notification but nothing in Messages app

I have found posts on the forum about not receiving text message notifications but this question is the opposite.

I received two text message notifications recently that did not appear in the Message app.

The first time this happened I cleared it too quickly so I have no idea what it was. The second time it happened, it was a spam/junk message. So it's possible I blocked the number a while ago from a previous junk message. So perhaps it's possible blocked sender messages still get notifications? If so, that's a poor job of blocking.

Any suggestions what is causing this? Would hate to miss legitimate messages and would like to block spam messages but can't do either if I can really see them.

The “Unknown Senders” filter was/is NOT enabled.

Contacted Apple support and they admitted this is a bug.

Hey Joe Reach,

We'd be happy to help out. Sounds like you got a notification for a message but don't see it in the Messages app. Your assumption that this might have been a spam/junk message or a message from a blocked contact is the most likely case, but we could only speculate whether this was the case or not. Since there's no evidence of said messages, there's really no way to determine it's origin.

It's also possible that messages from unknown senders might be getting filtered out perhaps. In which case you can find more details about that here:

Filter messages from unknown senders
With iMessage, you can filter messages from unknown senders, and you won’t get notifications from them.

Go to Settings  > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

When this setting is on, you can only see messages from people who aren’t in your contacts when you go to Filters > Unknown Senders.

Note: You canʼt open any links in a message from an unknown sender until you add the sender to your contacts or reply to the message.

This is outlined further here: Block, filter, and report messages on iPhone - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!
