delete key

When I select a message in the Message Viewer on the left side of my screen and delete it, the next message to it (below) sometimes gets deleted, too. Any suggestions for preventing this will be most welcome. Very annoying, and also inconsistent.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

One thing I'd check is Sys Prefs>Keyboard>Key Repeat & delay until Repeat.

I wish to delete several messages but using Shift or command keys does not allow selection more than one. Pressing shift key doesn't not allow me to select multiple messages to delete. It works on my phone but not my iBook.
