Parental Controls Not Working: Child can text/call/facetime unapproved contacts

I have two kids, each have our old phones to play around with. Each of the phones have parental controls set up the same. One child's phone only allows him to contact people in his contact list that I have set up. The other child can type in any number he wants and in turn, isn't blocked from contacting people outside of the contact list I have set up.

I have reset the phone, I have deleted everything and started over again so many times. Why are these phones set up the exact same way but one is working as intended while the other does not?

Not sure if it helps but the one working is an iPhone 8; one not working correctly is iPhone 6. Both are up to date of software.

Please help before I've pulled out every strand of hair I have left!

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Thanks for reaching out ande08,

It sounds like you're having some trouble with restricting the devices of your children. We can help.

Let's go ahead and start from the beginning to make sure we didn't inadvertently miss anything. You can follow these steps to Use Screen Time on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to restrict calling.

Give those steps a try, and see if there is any change.

We'll go from there.

Thanks for reaching out. Yep- did all of that. Everything is set up as I want…except he can literally just type in any number he wants into the “To” field and it’ll let him contact them. (Whereas my other kid with iPhone 8- the number turns red and he gets a message that he can’t contact them).

on my phone, it shows “Communication Limits” as a setting. On the iPhone 6, it does not. (For reference- it appears on both my phone and iphone8 for the other kid). At this point I’m just assuming iPhone 6 doesn’t support the same level of controls. It might have it on my side to set up but lacks ability to actually carry it through on his phone. Which…is still annoying. Why show it as an option if it can’t be supported?
