I’ve read previous old posts regarding this problem and see it’s recommended that I should reinstall vlc, but should I uninstall it first or can I just go ahead and install it again as if it’s the first time? If I have to uninstall first, will I lose all videos etc?

You can just download VLC from the VideoLAN site. When you install it, the Finder will pop a dialog where you choose replace and overwrite the previous version.
The current VideoLAN download button for macOS offers a selector, but if you are on Intel, just clicking the Download button gets you what you need.

I'm sorry, I don't know what an audio codec is. I export my videos to the USB so I can share them with family on a tv screen, so saving to the drive isn't an option. The same USB memory stick has several other videos on it I've exported in the past and they all play sound, but not this latest export.
I usually just download .mkv and without that option, .mp4 videos. I then just drag and drop them on a FAT32 formatted USB stick and insert that into my LG UBK-90 player for watching on the 4K TV. Never lose audio tracks.
I almost never transcode unless it is .mkv to .mp4, and for that I use Handbrake.fr.
Thank you, but I've tried dragging and dropping but that results in individual photos and videos displayed separately, not as a continuous mp4 video. It's a slideshow I'm trying to export and I can't understand why it just won't work this time when it always has in the past. Sorry if I'm being dense here - I really am not very technically minded, as you can tell!
Deleting VLC and reinstalling will not delete any of your videos.

I now have another problem! I've exported the video to a memory stick but there's no sound. There's sound when I play it on my Mac but not when I play the video through the memory stick.
Did you actually "export" the file or just save it to the drive?
I exported it. I've done it before with other videos and not had a problem but this time there's no sound.
It's possible the audio codec wasn't included. If it were me, I would just save it to the drive.
By "drive" I meant the "USB memory stick".
I just did. And all my files are gone.
