iPhone calendar is not syncing when connected and backing up to Mac

New iPhone 13mini. Connected via cable to MBAir M1 to back it up and sync calendar, contacts, etc. Noticed Calendars not synced. I found this message: "iPhone 13 is syncing calendars with iCloud. Your calendars are up to date across all your devices. To sync calendars from this Mac, turn off Calendars in your iCloud settings."

I've gone to iCloud, no app or anything checked. Apps syncing to iCloud Drive is blank. None.

I'm on road a lot. Often with poor connection. I avoid iCloud completely.

I only backup iPhones to computer, and computer to backup portable hard drive.

Is there something I missed? Every time I update computer or phones, I worry that iCloud is reinserted into system.

thanks for help.

If you avoid iCloud completely how do you think they are going to sync...?

iCloud is the sync services, turn everything off it suits your needs, besides your Calendar.

You have to be signed into the same AppleID

>System Settings>AppleID>iCloud> check the box(s)

If you still have an issue, sign out of iCloud and back in again.

So, changed settings on both MBA and iPhone 13 to turn on iCloud for Calendars. plugged iPhone in, put both online, and synced.
I now have 4 entries of most holidays. But obvious slant. 4 St. Patricks day; 4 Easter sunday and Monday; but only 1 palm sunday and Passover. But not a single one of the entries that I put on the calendar of my MBA on the iPhone. Not one. All the cloud did was add multiple copies of holidays and basketball games. none of the entries that mattered.
Now I got to figure out why all these holidays came from and avoid having to remove 1 at a time.
But explain to me why syncing involves iCloud, when devices are hardwired together. And who put all these calendars on my iCalendar. i never added them. Christian holidays? 4 tax day.
BTW, before the sync, my iPhone and MBA only had 1 entry per holidays. how could syncing with iCloud produce 4?

Sounds like a real mess—

I never had your issue , nor can I reproduce it, which is of no use to you.

your cabled together only would be a one time "sync" — that seems hardly a solution with multiple devices.

Leroy,

Thanks. and a special thanks for including screenshot. iCloud is at more than 1 place in System setting so it helps.

I want to be clear. Even though my Mac and iPhone are hardwired together for backup, syncing Calendar requires use of internet connection for both and iCloud to store Calendar in cloud?

That is exactly what Apple support page says. But then why does my Mac say, “To sync calendars from this Mac, turn off Calendars in your iCloud settings.” Is that saying that syncing from Mac, w/o iCloud, only adds calendar entries from Mac to iPhone? that’d be ok, b/c I do 95% of calendar on my Mac, but rely on iPhone Calendar when I’m out.

But then, if syncing Calendars requires iCloud I’ll do it. I had it that way a year or more ago, but had double entries on both calendars. Same thing happened before on syncing Contacts, doubled entire Contacts and even after removed syncing and iCloud, Contacts app still does not work right. Even 2 computers later.

leroy, sorry to blow up at you. You’re only trying to help me. I apologize. I’m mad this institution.

so found all the calendars on iPhone. Every one of my email accounts had a Holidays calendar and each had been selected, highlighted. But big contributor was at end , a long list of iClouds own calendars, all selected: Siri suggestions, “found in natural language,” Reminders. Also the ones I use all the time, facts/events, Travel, financial, to-do, personal/B-days? Could these be ones I wanted to sync? why on iCloud list of calendars?

I didn’t select all these. none set on Calendars on MBA or iPhone. obviously they are the default when you use iCloud to sync.

but why did none of my entries get synced?

My settings were almost same as yours. I just ran sync again, after un-selecting almost all Apple defaults. Removed most of unwanted dups. (although added a few flights from Charlotte and Nashville to Miami??? all during same day and time period. serious multi-tasking).
