Playing my music after cancelling Apple Music

After cancelling Apple Music, the Music app on my Mac is no longer able to play any of the music I owned previously. When I select them to play, Music responds: "This requires iTunes Match or Apple Music." even though I own it and have it on file. The files are still on the computer (I can locate them with the Finder).

How do I fix this?

Hello Bruce648,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that the music that you had purchased prior to subscribing to Apple Music can no longer be played since canceling your Apple Music subscription. We are happy to help.

Prior to subscribing to Apple Music, did you back up or save copies of your playlist. If so, please use the steps here to import your playlist: Save a copy of a playlist in Music on Mac - Apple Support

"Import a Music playlist

Note: You must first have an exported Music playlist (in an XML format).

  1. In the Music app  on your Mac, choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
  2. Choose the XML file to import.
  3. The imported playlist includes only songs and music videos already in your music library. Unavailable items are removed from the list."

If you did not make a backup or copy of your music playlists, we recommend that you import the files to your computer again.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.
