Airpods Max only playing out of one ear and won't reset

My airpods max have only been playing out of the left ear. I've tried resetting but I only get the pairing white light. After messing with it for an hour or so I forgot the device on my iphone and realized that there were two "AirPods Max" showing up in the other devices section in the bluetooth settings. I connected to them both and realized one was for the right ear and one was for the left ear. I can't connect to them both at the same time though so still have the same problem. When I'm connected to the left ear the digital crown doesn't work either.

How can I fix this?
