AirPods Max Head Detection Not Working Anymore

My AirPods Max don’t know when they’re on my head anymore. My phone sees them and knows they’re connected, and sometimes I can make audio come out of them, but anytime I put them on my head, neither Transparency or Noise Cancellation come on. In Bluetooth settings, when I choose Noise Cancellation, I’m told to “Place AirPods Max On Your Head To Use Noise Cancellation”, even though they are on my head. Hard resetting (holding the two buttons together for fifteen seconds until the light flashes orange three times) used to help, and I used to have to hard reset at least three times a day to make the headphones play any audio, but now hard resetting does nothing. If I can get audio playing from my phone, it only ever comes through one cup most of the time. When I do get it through both ear cups, the standard Off mode (neither Noise Cancellation or Transparency) makes me nauseous. Are there any other troubleshooting steps short of me bringing these headphones into an Apple Store?

Thanks for reaching out _brianhamilton,

It sounds like your AirPods Max are not working correctly, and the features you expect to work are not doing so correctly. We can help.

Since you've already tried some great steps to reset them without any change, our recommendation from here is to have them evaluated for service or replacement.

To locate the service options in your region, you can connect with Apple directly using either Get Support or if you're in a region without direct support options, you can also Contact Apple for support and service.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
