My laptop was stolen and I see the location
My laptop was stolen and I see the location in a residential area. The police can't do anything because of privacy reasons.
Does anyone have experience with this?
MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 12.6

Apple does not get involved in allegations of theft of their devices.
¿Have you filed a formal report of THEFT with the Police?
Your local police can not act without such a report, and once they have it, you can ask them more strongly to pursue the device's recovery.
Many organizations are not Project and Goal oriented, but instead PROCESS oriented, and the Police are no exception. You need to follow all their required steps, in order, before they will act.

I did report to the police immediately. I am afraid you are correct about process oriented.
Does Apple register stolen hardware and use the information when the new "owner" does an update for example?
Would be of great use.
"You are not the rightful owner of this Laptop with serial number P01339. Please return it to the genuine owner..."
Wishful thinking.

No, because Apple has no way of knowing who the rightful owner is. People give away, donate or sell hardware all the time.
If the police won't help you, there's not much you can do. Do NOT go to the house yourself. There are numerous news reports of people getting badly hurt doing that.
Thanks for the advice
