iPhone BLASTS music when I remove my AirPods

I’ve been using AirPods with my iPhones for years, and have not had this problem until the last few months.

Occasionally, when I remove my AirPods and put them in their case, my iPhone randomly blasts music out of the speakers. But the issue is, it’s not even music I was listening to. In fact, the Apple Music app isn’t even open. I can be listening to a podcast, watching a YouTube video, etc., and then when I remove the AirPods, the phone suddenly launches Apple Music on its own and plays music I haven’t listened to in YEARS.

This happens whether Apple Music is open or not, and whether my phone is on silent or not. So it is constantly happening when I’m removing my AirPods and walking into somewhere quiet. It’s absolutely infuriating. Please help.

Hi wwjbd,

A good first step for unexpected AirPod behavior is to reset the AirPods. How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro outlines the steps for this as:

  1. "Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
    • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
    • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.

5. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.

6. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*

7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen."

If that doesn't impact the issue you're describing, consulting with Apple Support would be the next step to investigate further.

Regards.
