Guided access not working

I use multiple iPad's with children in a preschool with autism who are using the devices for communication. Some of my kids try to find ways to get into the technological side of things and change everything around, so I use (and rely on) the grey out boxes to block those areas. What I've found will often happen, is that, when I put the boxes on the first time you can still click on, and get into the menus even though they're greyed out. The second time you do it, it works, but only for a short time and then the boxes disappear and you can get into the menus again. This happens on multiple iPad's (iPad 9th gen, iOS 16.2 and another one, I'm not sure which) and multiple apps (LAMP and Proloquo2go).

If anyone has an idea of how to fix this so the boxes stay, or even if anyone just knows of this as a glitch, please let me know. Any information is helpful, thank you!

Good day to you dlpatterson32,

Do you experience similar issues in Apple-developed apps such as Safari when using Guided Access? If you haven’t had a chance to test, please do. This will help us further isolate.

Also, make sure iPadOS 16.3 is installed on devices running iPadOS 16, or that latest version of iPadOS for the device. The following article goes over installing those updates either from a computer or from the iPad itself. Update your iPhone or iPad

Thanks.

I’ve been experiencing the same exact thing. I also work in preschool classroom utilizing proloquo2go. I trialed the guided access in Google Chrome and experienced the same problem, so it is not unique to the communication apps. The iPads are all utilizing 16.3.1 and updates state they are up to date. Hoping Apple has a fix because we are constantly having to go in and restore the communication apps from backups.

The guided access function works in the sense that it locks the student into the one app. The feature that is glitching is the “grey out boxes”. The feature is supposed to hide/block certain buttons within the app, like settings/editing in proloquo2go but due to the glitch, the student is still able to access those buttons, even when greyed out. So single app mode would not be useful in this case.
