Apple Maps navigation quit recalculating

Apple maps navigation automatically recalculated if I made a wrong turn or decided to go a slightly different way. After I updated to iOS 16.3 it now simply says "return to route" and provides no help doing so. This largely defeats the purpose of a navigation system.
