I have the similar issue. My location access is set to Always.
The issue came in post the latest update of iOS hence the forum needs to test and find a fix to this.
I have tried this in 3 different model of iphones (15 pro max, 15 pro and 14) hence not a device specific issue.
You have failed to realize that Google Maps has been updated 8 times in just the last month for bug fixes. The bug is from an update to the app that was introduced by Google and will have to be fixed in a future update by Google. That is not a problem that will be fixed by Apple. Let Google know that their app is still not working correctly.

Did you contact Google support? Google Maps is NOT an Apple product.

This is an Apple Support forum (even though it is user to user and no one from Apple is here) and not a general discussion forum...so your point is...?
In any case, if you want to find an answer to your question, you probably might be better served by doing a Google search (no pun intended) on the web.

Aside, my phone has also started heating up while using the carplay feature and it gets hot to an extent that i need to set it in the AC grill sometimes to cool it off.
In case anyone can help.
I'm having the same issue!!
This DEFINITELY feels like a Google Maps bug, but it doesn’t hurt to ask Apple if there’s a reason it’s happening, just in case there is a fix from Apple’s end with the new update.
The more people trying to fix what is a pretty big issue (the GPS feature just isn’t working, and that’s a problem mid-stream driving), the quicker a fix will be found
Google Maps has a report feature.

Does anybody have a fix for this? I have the same issue. Thanks!
