iTunes won't download podcasts

I'm running iTunes 12.10.11.2 on a Windows 7 desktop. It's recently started refusing to download episodes of certain podcasts, throwing up a grey exclamation mark symbol (which I can't ever hover over to get information from, because a play button covers it as soon as the mouse goes over it).

Initially, this was only happening for one new podcast I'd subscribed to, then newer episodes of ones I've already been listening to (episodes from late 2022 ish) and now spreading to many podcasts, regardless of age of episodes. I tried deleting and readding one podcast that had been affected and it now won't even download/acknowledge episodes that I've previously downloaded and that are clearly still on my harddrive.

Hi Brian,

I can download the same podcasts on my iPhone with no problem. I've not purchased any music in the iTunes store to test with, but it seems to be loading samples ok, which it's not doing for podcasts. I've just done a complete reinstallation of iTunes (deleting all traces of system data for it) and the problem is persisting. There haven't been any changes to my PC in the period that iTunes has stopped downloading podcasts that I can think of.

I managed to get an error code from iTunes for a failed podcast download (by switching to the file view for podcasts rather then the feed) and it gave the error code 0x80090302.

"There was a problem downloading <redacted podcast name> An unknown error occurred (0x80090302).

Please check that the URL is correct and the connection to the network is active and try again."

The podcasts that are still downloading correctly are from mostly from the BBC, while the ones that won't download are from the likes of Acast, Libsyn and others and I'm able to access and manually download files from the URLs stated in iTunes through my web browser, which makes me think the issue is on Apple's end rather than mine

Hi TransmitHim,

Thank you for letting us know more about the situation.

Since the issue is still occurring, please check out the information outlined in the following link, to ensure the correct process is being used to download podcasts from the iTunes Store, so we can make sure there's no issue there: Download podcasts from the iTunes Store on PC

Download or subscribe to a podcast
1. In the iTunes app  on your PC, choose Podcasts from the pop-up menu at the top left, then click Store.
The Store button in the navigation bar.
2. Click in the search field in the top-right corner of the iTunes window and enter a word or phrase.
As you type, iTunes displays a list of items that match the search text you entered.
3. To choose where you want to search, click Store in the top-right corner of the search results.

The search field with the typed entry “Mozart.” In the search results pop-up menu, Store is selected.

4. Press Enter.

Your search results appear in the iTunes window.

Note: Instead of searching in the iTunes Store, you can browse—click Store, look through the various collections or categories in the window, then select an item.

5. To preview an item before downloading it, move the pointer over the item, then click the Preview button .
6. Select the podcast you want to download, then do one of the following:

• Download a single episode: Click the Get button next to the episode.
• Subscribe to the podcast: Click Subscribe.

iTunes downloads the most recent episode.

Tip: You can also subscribe to a podcast without using the iTunes Store—just choose File > Subscribe to Podcast, then enter the podcast’s internet address. You can usually find the address on that podcast’s webpage.

If you continue to experience an issue, please contact Apple Support for assistance. You may be able to reach them here: Contact Apple Support

Thank you.

Hey TransmitHim,

You mentioned that this is happening on a PC within iTunes. Do you have any other devices with access to these same podcasts, like an iPhone, and if so, does a similar error appear there, or do they work normally there? Also, is this specific to podcasts or are music tracks affected also? Has anything else changed on your computer since this started to happen? This could be security settings, network configuration, new apps, or a host of other potential items. Changes could be important as they might affect the behavior you're seeing.

Report back what you find in testing, and we'll see what we can do to assist.

Take care.
