Blade cuts during playback

I do a TON of blade cuts during playback (it's the fastest way for me to work). However, every time I make a blade cut, the audio waveform blanks out until I stop playback, and then takes a couple of seconds to reappear, before I can continue work again.

My type of work absolutely relies on seeing the waveform during playback, so making hundreds of blade cuts is slowing me down 100x.

Is there any way to cache the waveform, or turn off the constant waveform recalculation? I don't know of any other program that works this way (constantly blanking out the waveform whenever a blade cut is made).

I'd even consider using a different program to edit, but I love FCP's magnetic timeline which is also crucial, so I can't give it up!

Instead of making blade cuts "on the fly", set Markers instead (just type the M key as you play).

Once you have all the markers set, set the Tool to Blade, hold down the N key (or type the N key to turn on snapping) if it is not on and skim through and blade at all the markers. With snapping on, the edit point for Blade will snap to the marker.

Unfortunately, FCP's waveform recalculation during blade cuts is a known issue, and there isn't a direct solution to turn off the recalculation. However, there are some ways to speed up the waveform redrawing, such as:

  • Increasing the cache size in the Playback preferences, so FCP can store more of the audio waveform in memory, reducing the time it takes to redraw it.
  • Purging the cache by using the "Edit > Purge > Audio Render Files" option, freeing up memory that can be used for redrawing the waveform.
  • Working with lower-resolution audio, as the waveform redrawing process is less intensive.

It is worth noting that while these options may improve the waveform redrawing process, it is not possible to eliminate it completely.

Nice idea, but it would transform my edit process into a 2-pass process (one pass doing markers, then going back and blading everything, THEN doing a second pass to finally remove all the content I don't need). I'm currently doing all of this in one pass, which is ideal for my workflow (i.e. I make a decision to remove something, I blade it, and I remove it). To have to break this into two passes would be laborious.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Yes, I'm on an Apple silicon Mac (M1 Max MBP). There's almost nothing on the timeline, just one continuous clip. This also happens when using proxy files. I'll try and make a video demo tomorrow. It has always happened for me. (The key being, I'm doing blade cuts while playback is going on, because I like working in a fluid editing environment without having to stop and start constantly.)
