I am reopening this question in case someone has found a solution.
I have an old 2011 iMac I'd like to recycle. This is NOT a Trade-In. Apple's website says, "Does Apple offer recycling? Yes. Apple Trade In lets you recycle any Apple device (including devices from Apple-owned brands) at any Apple Store and on apple.com for free."
So, for folks who are not actually buying something with trade-in, I guess we're on our own? Or is there still hope?

Go to Apple Trade In - Apple. Scroll down to "Select your device to get a trade-in estimate." Select Computer, enter your serial number, and answer the questions. Due to the age of your Mac, recycling will be the only option available.

With Apple Trade In, you can also recycle your old devices. Simply follow the steps, and you'll be given a prepaid shipping label.
