Let's follow the steps below and see if we can get the keyboard functioning as expected.
"If other keys don’t work
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
> System Settings, click Accessibility 
in the sidebar, then click Keyboard on the right. (You may need to scroll down.) Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must press and hold a key longer than usual before it’s recognised.

That doesn't look random to me. You probably have the wrong input source active. German qwertz instead of English qwerty. Go to system settings > keyboard > input sources and get rid of the German from the list there, or anything other than US or ABC or similar.

Yes, that is totally wrong, it is for typing German and not English.
Use the + button to add US or ABC qwerty and use the minus button to get rid of ABC qwertz

Y and Z are reversed when you type one you get the other. This is brackets )=
This is semicolon Ö and apostrophe is ä. This is a hyphen ß

Hi Tom, that was one of the first things investigated to no avail. Thanks anyway.
What exactly do you have on your input source list? Y becoming z and ? becoming _ is just what a German mapping does. What do you get when you type semicolon and apostrophe?
