Apple TV automatically plays audio from iPhone after use of the Remote app. How do I stop this?

I’m having an issue whenever I use the Remote app to control my Apple TV. What happens is that the next time I pick up my iPhone to use Music, the audio output defaults to the Apple TV, interrupting whatever is playing there. (Much to my kids’ dismay.)

I have the Handoff Airplay settings set to “Never” but it still happens after a reboot of the phone and Apple TV. Now, there is a small bar at the bottom of the Music app with the player warning me that the output will be to the Apple TV (pictured), but most of the time I miss this because the text is too small, and this really shouldn’t be something I have to disable manually every time, especially with Automatically AirPlay to TVs set to Never. Am I missing some other setting, or is this a flaw in iOS 16.2?

Thank you, but my question is whether or not this automatic behavior can be disabled, as it is quite inconvenient to have to manually change the output every time after using Remote, which I do often. (For instance, I am often called to make an adjustment on the Apple TV for my kids, then go back to the music I am listening to for work. This happens maybe 5-10 times a day.)

Is this possible?

Hello mv360,

When you're connected to the Apple TV remote, you're connected to the Apple TV. When you change your playback to Music, it will use the device that is connected to the iPhone to play it. This would be expected behavior for iOS 16.

To avoid this, tap on the AirPlay icon when using the Music app and set the destination to the iPhone instead of the Apple TV. You can do this prior to play the song, to avoid any interruptions to what's playing on the Apple TV.

Learn more here: Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you don't prefer it to work this way or differently, then we'd suggest providing Apple with your feedback here: Product Feedback

Wishing you well, take care.
