iMessage notifications muted?

iMessage notifications muted?

I have an iMessage group chat that's very active (100+ messages per day). Usually, I have notifications muted for this one specific chat so it's not buzzing away (but I like being notified of non-group chat messages), and rely on the badge number to tell when new group chat messages are waiting for me.

At least, until now. I updated my iPhone to 16.2 yesterday, and now it seems to be a binary choice: either I get no alerts AND no badge numbers OR I get badge numbers AND alerts. I'd really like no alerts but to maintain badges. Has this option changed with the iOS update, or did something go wrong?

Thanks for the reply. The thing is I *do* want banners etc - just not for this one specific group chat. I was formally able to have that option by muting alerts for that one chat.

Thanks very much for the help anyway, appreciate it. It was certainly possible up until the recent update, unless I had some kind of weird bug working to my advantage! Hopefully someone has a similar issue and solution.
