iMessage notification badge shouldn’t count muted conversations

The iMessage badge showing the count of unread messages is useless because group chats I’ve muted are counted. There should be an option to exclude muted conversations from the count shown on the iMessage app badge on the home screen.

I used to hide alerts on iMessage and no badges would appear on the lock screen at all. Now when I get a message from a group chat that I hid alerts on it still appears on the lock screen. iMessage notifications muted? I have an iMessage group chat that's very active (100+ messages per day). Usually, I have notifications muted for this one specific chat so it's not buzzing away (but I like being notified of non-group chat messages), and rely on the badge number to tell when new group chat messages are waiting for me. At least, until now. I updated my iPhone to 16.2 yesterday, and now it seems to be a binary choice: either I get no alerts AND no badge numbers OR I get badge numbers AND alerts. I'd really like no alerts but to maintain badges. Has this option changed with the iOS update, or did something go wrong?

How do I permanently silence group chats in iMessage? I cannot silence group chats anymore with one of these last updates, contacted support twice about it, nothing was resolved from it. No matter if I select “hide alerts” or swipe one the chats and hit the 🔕. Only thing I was told to remedy this is to set up something in focus which is just absolutely ridiculous [Re-Titled by Moderator]
