Mail auto filing keeps just recommending important

Previously when I would select an email (or a batch of emails from the same sender, such as order confirmations from the same vendor) and tap “move” to file them in the folder those emails normally go to, the mail app used to reliably suggest the file that all other emails from that sender were in. Recently, it’s stopped suggesting those folders for the most part and has started suggesting the “Important” folder as the place to file most emails, which means I have to tap the “move message” option and scroll to find the folder I want to file them in.

I’ve tried waiting/training for the past month like in another post I found here and it just keeps showing important as the suggestion. I never had this problem before my upgrade to iOS 16

The only mail provider I know that uses 'Important' is Google mail.

On previous OS versions I have deleted the Mail app in order to remove these remembered suggestions. You could try that...

Delete all third party accounts from Settings, Mail, Accounts

Settings, [your name], iCloud, (show all) turn off "icloud mail"

Delete the Mail app

Restart the iPhone

Find Mail on App Store and reinstall using the little cloud symbol

Settings, Mail, Accounts add all your third party accounts back

Check each account has Mail turned on and choose whether to turn contacts, calendar, etc on or not depending on where you host these data.

Settings, [your name], iCloud, (show all) turn on "icloud mail"

Try to move a mail and let us know if the remedy still works. If it does work there will be no suggestion at all.
