Automatic iOS Filing of Emails

I have extensive email folder structures for all my email addesses.

I have all my email addresses on my iPhone 13 Pro Max (512 GB).

Until iOS 17, when filing the emails I want to keep, in most cases I was offered the most likely folder to file the email. The system would be continuously learning this.

Since iOS 17, this automatic offering of folders to file the emails has stopped.

So, I find myself scrolling up and down email structures to file emails in appropriate places.

With 70-150 emails requiring filing every day, this really is an unwelcome new task.

Is there any plan to reinstate this highly convenient feature?

Is there a new setting I have missed?

Help would be highly appreciated.

Dear Grace2211,

Thank you for your reply.

It isn’t the setting up of directories within each email Inbox that I have trouble with.

The problem is that under iOS 16 (and previous iOS versions) I read my Outlook emails, then delete it or save it to a directory.

Under previous iOS versions when I wanted to file/save an email the system would ‘learn’ where that email was most likely to go. It was right most of the time. If wrong, I would manually file the email by scrolling to the relevant directory.

With iOS 17, the system NEVER offers a directory suggestion for saved emails.

This means every email must be filed by scrolling to a directory.

This is a major retrograde step and my friends and colleagues also find this a painful waste of time.

is there any thought to fix this?

Kind regards,

Alex_Oulton_Broad

Greetings Alex_Oulton_Broad

Thanks for connecting with Apple Support Communities. The steps are still the same when organizing your emails in iOS 17:

"Organize your mail with mailboxes

You can choose which mailboxes to view, reorder your mailboxes, create new ones, or rename or delete mailboxes. (Some mailboxes can’t be changed.)

The Mailboxes edit screen. Optional Mailboxes are listed from top to bottom with a checkbox to the left of each option. At the bottom-right corner of the screen is a button labeled New Mailbox.

To organize your mailboxes, tap in the upper-left corner until you see Mailboxes. Tap Edit, then do any of the following:

  • View mailboxes: Select the checkboxes next to the mailboxes you want to include in the mailboxes list.
  • Reorder mailboxes: Touch and hold the Reorder button next to a mailbox until it lifts up, then drag it to the new position.
  • Create a new mailbox: Tap New Mailbox in the lower-right corner, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Rename a mailbox: Tap the mailbox, then tap the title. Delete the name, then enter a new name.
  • Delete a mailbox: Tap the mailbox, then tap Delete Mailbox."

More details here: Organize email in mailboxes on iPhone

If the Mail app is not working as expected, be sure to complete the following steps to correct the behavior:

1. Restart your iPhone. This may seem like a simple step to take but can often resolve several issues.

2. Be sure you're running the latest version of iOS 17. Completing this step ensures that your device has the latest fixes. (Secure your data with a backup): Update your iPhone or iPad

If the issue persists, we suggest that you reach out to Apple. They will be able to look further into this with you:
