MacBook has battery charged enough to use but It shuts down and shows charge symbol.

Hello, lately my MacBook has this weird behaviour where I know its charged (and shows 40% for example) but once I open it from sleep mode (I can see battery is half charged) after a while it shuts down on its own and when I try to open it it shows the not charged symbol and doesn't start.

After I put it on the charger it opens and the battery is half charged, so this is not happening why it wasn't charged.

Can you please help?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.1

There is a good chance your battery may be failing. Option-click on the battery icon on the menubar to see the battery condition. If you see "Service Recommended", then it means you should have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider replace the battery. If you are running macOS 10.15 or earlier and the battery condition is anything other than "Normal", you should have the battery replaced.

Sometimes the battery condition can show as "Normal", but still have hardware issue with the battery. Sometimes the condition will change at a certain charge level on the battery. Sometimes the Apple Diagnostics may show a battery issue even if the battery condition is "Normal". Generally I find most battery issues will reveal themselves when the battery has a low charge (usually between 1% to 10% charge), so check the battery condition at this level if the battery condition is "Normal" at other times.

Hey there PanChris,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, if you check the Battery Health on your MacBook with the steps shown below, do you see that the battery is functioning normally, or do you see a message that service would be recommended?

For more details, check out this link here: Get help with your Mac laptop battery - Apple Support

Check Battery Health
Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences (or System Settings), then click Battery. The Battery information shown here includes Battery Health:
- Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
- Service Recommended: The battery's ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or the battery isn't functioning normally. You can safely continue to use your Mac, but if your battery needs service or its lowered charging capacity is affecting your experience, get your battery evaluated at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contact Apple.

If the Battery Health shows that the battery is functioning normally, give the steps under the "Resolve battery-charging issues" section a try, and let us know the results.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Cheers!

Thank you for your reply, very helpful and much appreciated. I've checked my Battery health from system preferences with the steps mentioned above and Battery Health is Normal. I've also tried the steps under "Resolve battery-charging issues" section. First attempt of the scenario again and seems ok. Hopefully it will be okay

Much appreciated, thanks very much for your time.
