External SSD Eject Notification Issue

I keep getting a message that my external SSD was not ejected properly when I didn't even try to eject it. I have multiple notifications on my screen after I open my MBP from being asleep. What could be causing this issue?

I am using a 14" 2021 MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.1. The SSD in question is a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD in 2TB. I am not using any adapters with the SSD, just running it straight into the MacBook. The external USB dock I do have does not have a USB-C port, as I use it to connect my USB-A devices and the SSD doesn't support an external power supply. I could try to connect the SSD to my work computer as it is also a Mac. I have another SanDisk external SSD in the same model but in the 500GB version connected as my Time Machine backup and it does not have any issues. I'm fairly certain this has been a common occurrence since I got the SSD, which was before I upgraded to Ventura.

Hello jbuyske,

To help rule out issues with the cable being used to connect the external drive, it may be beneficial to try using a different one.

Similarly, try connecting the drive to a different port on the Mac to help rule out issues with the existing one.

As you mentioned it's occurring when the Mac is asleep, try adjusting the settings as seen here: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac

For example, if you have the option to put hard disks to sleep enabled, try disabling this as a test.

Cheers.

What is the exact model of the Mac and version of macOS? You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac".

What is the exact make & model of the external SSD?

Are you using any adapters, docks, or hubs with this SSD?

If you are connecting the SSD directly to the Mac, then maybe try connecting it to a dock or hub, or use a dedicated power supply for the external drive if the SSD supports one.

Are you able to test this SSD with another Mac? Or any other computer? Do you have any other external drives to test?

Make sure to disconnect all other external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

Try booting the Mac into Safe Mode to see whether you have the same problem.

Has this SSD ever worked properly with this specific Mac or is this a recent change in behavior? If a recent change in behavior, then what may have changed around the time of the first incident? Same goes for whether this SSD has ever worked for this version of macOS?
