If I need to upgrade my modem should I continue with my AirPort Extreme router and the Time Capsule or is it time that I need to change that as well? They are working well and I hate to change if not essential.

No reason to stop using any product that is working well. The AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule still provide adequate security for use on a simple home network.
I'll probably continue to use my AirPorts.....now about 5 years old....for another 2 years or so.
