Epson Scan App incompatible with Monterey - can I make ICA work instead?

Have a perfectly reliable Epson Stylus printer/scanner that I do not wish to consign to landfill... printing function works fine with Monterey on recent new MacBook Air (M1) purchase however the scanner function does not work (latest scanner driver Epson have is dated 2013 and this simply will not open after installing on the MacBook). When trying to open the app I am not offered option to install/run Rosetta either. I guess I am lumbered until Epson can be bothered to update their drivers although this particular printer is discontinued model so I will not hold my breath. Apple Support have not resolved this either.

Am wondering whether I could use the Image Capture app as alternative but the device does not show up in list of devices when I open the Image Capture app. (The printer is wirelessly connected to the MacBook for normal printing - should I have to use a physical cable to connect if looking to use ICA?Getting very frustrated.

Here is the link to the page… this is for the specific printer and is an ICA driver found when you specify BigSur in the OS search option… oddly enough, Epson have emailed me today suggesting I install the exact same ICA driver.

I appreciate that it “appears” to be a driver specific to Big Sur but who knows, it may work for Monterey?

Bit of a breakthrough...

Went ahead and installed the 2021 "Big Sur" ICA Driver to the MacBook and I now have scanning capability using Apple's Image Capture application. No wires needed either (despite the fact that I have ordered a new USB cable just in case).

I am happy despite some of the settings/options limitations of Image Capture process compared to the full blown Epson UI.

(For info Epson have exactly the same ICA driver listed for Catalina, High Sierra and Mavericks - maybe they forgot to add it to the download option for Monterey for this particular printer?)

If Apple's Image Capture or Preview cannot access the scanner component of this device, then there is no inventing an ICA driver. See if your multifunction device has its scanner supported by the paid VueScan Professional (free trial).

If it does, VueScan will have a web page for that particular scanning support and if you scroll downward on that page, see if it says this device can be used on macOS without any vendor drivers. If it needs a working vendor driver, then you are done.

I have a Canon scanner that was vendor abandoned circa 2009 and I purchased VueScan Professional in 2010. I have never paid any upgrade fee to use that Canon scanner on every release of macOS including the current Ventura 13.1. I am not compensated in any manner for mentioning VueScan here.

I searched and found that model on the Epson EU website. When you select Ventura as the operating system, the driver v10.85 is dated 05-Nov-2020 but there is also an updater dated 02-Feb-2022. Ditto for Monterey.

Oddly enough, when I searched for the SX525WD on the Epson US website, it routed me to the Workforce WF-C5290 and when selecting Ventura there I do see a driver & utilities combo package installer dated 30-Nov-2021 that also includes driver v10.85.

I did not find an ICA driver for either of these models anywhere. Where did you find it?
