USB Detection Consistently Requires Restart

For some quick context:

We've been an Apple customer and MacBook Pro users for nearly 10 years—starting with a 2011 MacBook Pro. We've used 2011, 2015, 2018 and now a 2021 MacBook Pros.

Starting with the 2018 MacBook Pro, we've been using the Brydge Stone Pro hub to power our workstations. Single Thunderbolt 3 connection to power two monitors and a variety of other peripherals. The Brydge Stone Pro hub lists "All Thunderbolt™ 3 enabled devices" as supported and references the M1 chip throughout the product page.

The Issue:

At the beginning of the year, we upgraded to the 2021 MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max, retaining the Brydge Stone Pro hub and all our previous accessories.

Immediately, we started encountering issues with display detection. We've referenced several Apple help articles to try to resolve our issues to no avail. Initially we thought this might be a display issue as seen in other reported issues. However, after spending more time with the machines, it became clear that this is more of a USB detection issue as seen in other reported issues as well. Following Apple help articles proved fruitless.

The issue only presents itself when USB devices are not present and powered on prior to booting the MacBook from an "powered off" state. If the MacBook goes to sleep, most USB devices from the hub are not detected and no longer function. The exception to this rule appears to be my HHKB keyboard. However, displays, USB webcams and other USB accessories remain non-functioning.

The workaround:

The current workaround that we are forced to use is the same as found in this discussion: Why do I need to reboot my MacBook Pro M1… - Apple Community.

  1. Ensure all needed USB devices are attached to the hub
  2. Ensure all needed USB devices are powered on
  3. Start the MacBook Pro from a cold start

If the MacBook goes to sleep or a new USB device is attached, the steps to resolve/detect are:

  1. Ensure all needed USB devices are attached to the hub
  2. Ensure all needed USB devices are powered on
  3. Restart the MacBook Pro (Sleeping, Logging out, Detecting displays do not resolve the issue)

There is no way that this is by design. This is the first MacBook Pro we've had this kind of issue with and the discussions on this site indicate that it is not specific to Ventura, Monterey, or Big Sur, but present in all of these MacOS versions.

The questions are:

  1. Why is this happening?
  2. What is the solution?
  3. If there isn't one, when can we expect one?
  4. And, lastly, does anyone care about these issues?
