File download getting disrupted with message "The Network Connection Was Lost"

Hi - not sure if there ever was proper resolution (or suggestion) provided.

I have got an issue with Safari (and also other application running on macOS) not being able to download fully 16MB file. File download is getting abruptly terminated with error message "The Network Connection Was Lost" - all internet connectivity works at the same time (also connection to that host hosting the file)

This is ONY specific to Safari browser, I can download the same file multiple times in a row using Firefox, Chrome, Opera - this file download breaks ONLY using Safari . Have tried already Safari in safe mode - does not help.

This can be reproduced from multiple macOS clients so its not specific to one version!

I am seeing this on:

*macOS 13.0 - Safari 16.1

*macOS 13.1 - Safari 16.1

Apple support - in what situations Safari would throw such Error message? App running on macOS which needs to download the same file also complains about download disruption logging: error code= -1005.

Hi,

Thanks for the hint. I have followed your above and created new user with admin rights and can also reproduce the same "The network connection was lost" failure on Safari when logged in as new user.

I have moved my investigation into L3/L4 TCP layers and can see there was no loss of network connection - so such message is misleading (to general). So far I have been able to narrow this issue down occurring over connection with certain TCP/networking characteristics (I can download the same file from same macOS client from same location if client is on different internet connection). What I cannot understand is why all other browsers can handle file download over 'slower/bit worse' connection but Safari cannot !?,

Hi andrus007,

Testing in safe mode was a great step to try. You can isolate the issue further by testing in a new administrator account. This will help with determining if the issue is specific to one account or possibly system-wide. If needed, this article will guide you through creating a new account: Add a user or group on Mac.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose Administrator.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

Regards.
