copy mp3 files from laptop to iphone

Sorry--this isn't an answer, but another question. In the past, when I have selected a few files to transfer from the Mac to the iPhone, those files transferred, but all other files were deleted from the iPhone. Has that changed so that now I can transfer only certain files?
