USB C extension cable issue with M1 Mac

I've bought a couple different USB C extension cables for my M1 Mac that do not work with the USB C multiport hub adapter I use (houses an SD Card and mini SD Card slot, and 3 USB ports). The multiport hub works perfectly when I plug into the M1 Mac. However, I simply want to extend where I'm placing that hub with an extension cable, and it's not working. I actually went to the nearest Apple Store and Apple does not sell these type of extension cables. They actually directed me to Walmart. Does anyone know what the problem might be and how I can accomplish what seems to be a rather simple task here?
